Salon Sanitation and Disinfection: What the State Actually Requires

What Michigan Actually Requires

Michigan's cosmetology rules define a disinfectant narrowly: a substance or product registered as a disinfectant with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. That's the bar. A spray that calls itself "sanitizing" or "antibacterial" on the front label but carries no EPA registration number does not satisfy the requirement, no matter how strong it smells.

The rules also require licensees to keep their attire and hands sanitary and to apply antiseptic to their hands before every service, not just the first one of the day. Salons need to keep an adequate amount of cleaning, disinfecting, and sterilizing supplies on hand to actually meet these requirements, and they're expected to keep the manufacturer's labeled container for every disinfectant and sterilant in use, since the label is what tells you the correct dilution and contact time. Sterilizing goes further still, eliminating essentially all microbial life including bacterial spores, and it normally needs an autoclave. Most hair and barbering stations don't run one and don't need to for everyday shears and combs. That level matters more for certain nail and medical-adjacent tools.

A station that holds up to inspection isn't complicated, it's just consistent. A few things separate a clean setup from one that gets written up:
